Hi Paul,
Well said. I was just having this conversation today with a client about that without engagement why bother even having a fan page. The more I can do to create a network where people have many different opportunities to share the better I see facebook pages working now and especially in the future as facebook continues to impact our buying decisions even more.

Happy Blogging,
Social Media Sean

@Jeannette - While I take a different approach to Facebook depending on the nature of the business, and some businesses are a more "natural" fit than others, I am convinced it is worthwhile for any business to have a Facebook page.

Before people get excited, throw together a page, name it, and start inviting all their friends, they should do a bit of planning - thinking long and hard about keywords, target audience, and "general interest". Once all your friends are on board (because they are your friends), why is anybody else a fan?

Just remember that the page should not automatically be named with the company name - in some instances, you might even exclude it from the name entirely. It is the immediate inclination, but isn't always best (and I have more than few bad examples, but won't go there).

Paul,

Thanks so much for this useful and easy to understand post. I've been on the fence about setting up a fan page, but you've convinced me to do so. I appreciate the tips to start it off right.
