Resolution: A Toned Body (of Work)

January 3, 2010
By

It’s just a few days past the start of the new decade.  If there ever were a time to consider getting serious about your blogging it’s now. Forget your resolutions to lose weight, exercise, be more social.  No, sit your fanny down at the computer, spread your fingers over the keyboard, and get in touch with your own thoughts on the screen.New Year Hat

A blog is enough of a resolution to carry you through an entire year — the ups and the downs.  It will let you work through your worries, give thanks for the good things, explore new opportunities, and pay it forward with wisdom already acquired.

Whatever your resolutions, a blog can help you realize your goals.

  • Weight loss blogs are almost as heavily represented in the blogosphere as political blogs, and equally well followed. Here’s a list of favorite weight loss blogs put together by the readers of the Cranky Fitness blog.
  • Unemployed and looking for a new job?  Many are using blogs to track their progress and gain positive feedback from others in the same situation. Here’s one of my favorites:  One Tomato at a Time.
  • Ready to pay it forward?  Blog for a cause.  You’ll find yourself in very good company.  BlogCatalog features 1,375 Activism and Social Cause blogs. And if your “cause” is really more of an area of expertise gained from wounds in your own battlefield, it is still paying it forward.  Check out this example — Woman’s Divorce —  providing divorce advice for women. The subtitle gives you the mission: Helping Women Survive Divorce and Rebuild Their Lives.
  • Have an area of expertise? Use the blog to show your thought leadership.  Lawyers are ahead of the pack on this, being so prolific, they have their own category of blogs called “Blawgs”!

It’s not only a new year, but a new decade.  If there ever were a year to join the digital ranks and dig into blogging, surely this is it.  If there ever were a time to use blogging to help achieve your other resolutions, this is it as well. If you only have room in your life for one big resolution, make it to blog.  There’s nothing more important than finding your own voice and at the end of this new year, I  can guarantee one thing:  you will have created  a process for progress and amassed a toned body of work that you will be proud to look back upon.  Happy New Year and Happy Blogging!
