		<description>I don&#039;t have a necessarily better idea, but the Onion has done a pretty good job of making their advertising unobtrusive enough without video. If you haven&#039;t seen it when you go to theonion.com you get an ad, which you can totally click through, before you can see the content.
The downside to the video ads, especially for places such as Facebook and Twitter, is that people who work in offices won&#039;t often get the message. The reason the video content works so well is because people are already watching videos. Text needs a different method - and here I couldn&#039;t agree more that the print-style banners are a total waste of energy.
Another consideration - to go with the &quot;donate now&quot; button - is  &quot;sponsored by.&quot; You click on something and while your page is loading  you get a &quot;This content sponsored by&quot; message. It makes advertisers look supportive of the site. Think PBS or NPR. 
While you&#039;re right that it has to be done better, I think there is a future in as opt-out membership (paying to not see ads). The key is to find the critical mass where in I&#039;m willing to use the site for a fee OR to endure the ads without making me stop visiting out of annoyance.
